A common and highly debilitating consequence of manic depression is risk-taking behaviour. This is a behaviour that comes from increased drive and motivation. Manic depression, otherwise known as bipolar disorder, is a condition that causes the individuals mood to shift and cycle from depressed to manic within a certain yet repetitive time frame. Just as suicide is tempting during the depressed phase, risk-taking is extremely tempting during the manic phase.

Common forms of risk-taking include promiscuity, gambling, and drug use. The common factor between those three are essentially a pattern of thrill-seeking. The problem of manic depression is really a problem of neurotransmitter misregulation. Failing to regulate neurotransmitters results in disequilibrium. Although the depressive phase is caused by a drop in serotonin, the manic phase is caused by rise a in dopamine. Given that these two can occur at the same time, it is possible but rare for a person to experience a simultaneous overlap of the two phases. In all three cases, lithium has proven to be highly effective in treating the symptoms; a psychiatric intervention is a requirement for these sort of prescriptions.

In some cases, family and friends intervene when they notice unnaturally erratic behaviour that is perceived to be uncharacteristic of the individual. However, the majority of cases requires medical or legal intervention. This is especially true with respect to risky practices, given that the repercussions are very noticeable. The risk of being promiscuous is STDs, the risk of gambling is financial loss, and the risk of drug use is addiction and overdose, all of which require medical and legal intervention.
